Heres an assortment of fascinating realities about lead, including about its properties, uses, and sources. Fascinating Lead Facts Lead is a moderately plenteous component since it the endpoint of the rot plans of numerous radioactive components with higher nuclear numbers.Because its genuinely simple to extricate (for a metal), lead has been utilized since ancient time. Lead was promptly accessible to everyday citizens in the Roman Empire, discovering use in dishes, plumbing, coins, and sculptures. Individuals utilized it for regular things for a large number of years, until whenever was at last seen as noxious close to the furthest limit of the nineteenth century.Tetraethyl lead was added to gas to diminish motor thump during the 1920s. In any event, when it was created, it was known to be toxic. A few assembly line laborers passed on from lead introduction. Notwithstanding, leaded gas wasnt eliminated until the 1970s or restricted for use in street vehicles until 1996. The metal is as yet utilized in vehicle batteries, for making leaded glass, and for radiation protecting. Overall creation and utilization of the metal proceeds to increase.Lead is a post-progress metal. Its not as responsive the same number of different metals, aside from in powdered state. It shows feeble metallic character, frequently framing covalent bonds with different components. The component promptly bonds to itself, shaping rings, chains, and polyhedrons. In contrast to most metals, lead is delicate, dull, and not truly adept at directing power. Powdered lead ignites with a blue-white fire. The powdered metal is pyrophoric.Pencil lead is really the graphite type of carbon, yet lead metal is sufficiently delicate to leave an imprint. Lead was utilized as an early composing instrument.Lead mixes taste sweet. Lead acetic acid derivation has been called sugar of lead and was utilized as a sugar in the past.In the past, it was hard for individuals to differentiate tin and lead. Today was the first snowfall of the year! How exciting, I didnt even know it was coming. Two of my best friends from high school were visiting me and another one of my best friends who goes to MIT. We were walking across the Harvard Bridge and bang, we felt a snowflake (the first snowflake of winter, how exciting)! Gradually, it began snowing harder; the flakes became pretty big and fell for a couple of hours. Unfortunately, it looks like it has transitioned to rain =( Last week, I finally busted out my winter coat and put away my summer clothes; its always a semi-sweet transition. I love watching snow fall, seeing the river freeze, and having an excuse to drink ungodly amounts of hot chocolate. Nothing beats sitting by a fireplace (even if it is boarded up and non-functional, as are most fireplaces at MIT) and throwing snowballs at unsuspecting friends. But, frostbite is no fun and neither is being wet all the time. In case you havent lived through a Boston winter, heres a quick preview: The average high in January is 36 degrees, the average low is 22 (its also the coldest month, yay for IAP). The record low for November is 8 degrees and the most precipitation on average occurs in November. The lowest temperature ever recorded was -18 degrees in 1934. According to the Old Farmers Almanac, the winter season will be milder than normal, December and January will be exceptionally cold. Winter-season temperatures will be near normal in Maine, but a degree or two colder than normal elsewhere, on average. Snowfall will be below normal in the northwest, but above normal elsewhere. A big snowstorm will hamper Christmas travel, with other major snowstorms in mid-December and the first half of March. Last year, on January 24, 2005, it snowed 13.4 inches in 2 days! (Pictures below!) The average snowfall for the entire month of January is 13.5 inches! So, I copied a poem by Tami Ryan below, and then pictures from today and the crazy IAP snowstorm from last year. My advice: dont worry about what you look like, get the puffiest and longest coat, the craziest wool hat, the warmest gloves, and the most durable boots. Get ready, its going to be AWESOME! A poem by Tami Ryan: Snowflakes infinitely drift from heaven, creating a pristine blanket as temperatures spiral downward Birds unheard songs stand still, frozen mid-song in the wintry air Autumns leaves long gone, the bare branches shiver beneath their layered scarves of ice You, with hands jammed into pockets and head bowed to stave the bitter cold and gusty wind, pray your brisk Winters walk allows a speedy arrival to your destination From today: Watching the snow from the shelter of a shoe store on Newbury Street The Hancock tower and Newbury Street Braving the weather and walking home Pictures from last years blizzard: It was so funny, you couldnt even see the parking meters, they were completely buried! Frank Lloyd Wright and his apprentices had traveled a long distance from his Taliesin school in Spring Green, Wisconsin to build a resort hotel in Chandler, Arizona. Because they were far from home, they set up camp on a stretch of the Sonoran Desert near the construction site outside of Scottsdale. Wright fell in love with the desert. He wrote in 1935 that the desert was a grand garden, with its rim of arid mountains spotted like the leopards skin or tattooed with amazing patterns of creation. Its sheer beauty of space and pattern does not exist, I think, in the world, Wright proclaimed. This great desert garden is Arizonas chief asset. Building Taliesin West The early encampment at Taliesin West contained little more than temporary shelters made of wood and canvas. However, Frank Lloyd Wright was inspired by the dramatic, rugged landscape. He envisioned an elaborate complex of buildings that would embody his concept of organic architecture. He wanted the buildings to evolve from and blend with the environment. In 1937, the desert school known as Taliesin West was launched. Following in the tradition of Taliesin in Wisconsin, Wrights apprentices studied, worked, and lived in shelters they crafted using materials native to the land. Taliesin is a Welsh word meaning shining brow. Both of Wrights Taliesin homesteads hug the contours of the earth like a shining brow on the hilly landscape. Organic Design at Taliesin West Architectural historian G. E. Kidder Smith reminds us that Wright taught his students to design in kinship with the environment, admonishing students, for instance, not to build on top of a hill in dominance, but beside it in partnership. This is the essence of organic architecture. Lugging stone and sand, the students constructed buildings that seemed to grow from the earth and the McDowell Mountains. Wood and steel beams supported translucent canvas roofs. Natural stone combined with glass and plastic to create surprising shapes and textures. Interior space flowed naturally into the open desert. For awhile, Taliesin West was a retreat from the harsh Wisconsin winters. Eventually, air conditioning was added and students stayed through the fall and spring. Taliesin West Today At Taliesin West, the desert is never still. Over the years, Wright and his students made many changes, and the school continues to evolve. Today, the 600 acre complex includes a drafting studio, Wrights former architectural office and living quarters, a dining room and kitchen, several theaters, housing for apprentices and staff, a student workshop, and expansive grounds with pools, terraces and gardens. Experimental structures built by apprentice architects dot the landscape. Taliesin West is home of the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture, whose alumni become Taliesin Fellows. Taliesin West is also the headquarters of the FLW Foundation, a powerful overseer of Wrights properties, mission, and legacy. In 1973 the American Institute of Architects (AIA) gave the property its Twenty-five Year Award. On its fiftieth anniversary in 1987, Taliesin West won special recognition from the U.S. House of Representatives, which called the complex the highest achievement in American artistic and architectural expression. According to the American Institute of Architects (AIA), Taliesin West is one of 17 buildings in the United States that exemplify Wrights contribution to American architecture. Next to Wisconsin, gathering of the waters, Wright has written, Arizona, arid zone, is my favorite State. Each very different from the other, but something individual in them both not to be found elsewhere. A company finances its assets through issue of bonds and stocks. Bonds: Bond is a debt instrument. Through bonds, an investor lends money to an entity (corporate or governmental). In return the entity pays the lender a fixed amount of interest. Bonds are issued for a defined period of time. Stocks: Stocks represent the original capital invested by the founders of the company. Later, stocks are divided into shares, having a certain face value. Now, there are two types of stocks, Common stock and Preferred stock. A common stock carries voting rights where as a preferred stock typically does not carry voting rights. Using these two instruments, a company can raise any amount of money to finance its assets. A company, since has many means of financing its assets, it also has a number of obligations to meet. A company usually splits its liabilities into short term (current liability) and long term. A liability must be settled through the payment of an asset in some time in future. A liability which is expected to be liquidated with in a companys operating cycle or one year is called short term liability. Now, any other left over liability which is not expected to be paid in a year are termed as long term liability. ( Bragg.M. In the Iliad, Homer described the wicked Thersites as possessing thin hair over a ââ¬Å"misshapen head,â⬠with one blinking eye and a lame leg. Physiognomy (the ââ¬Å"scienceâ⬠of reading personality characteristics into facial features) traces its practice to Homerââ¬â¢s Greece. We will write a custom essay sample on Physical Attractiveness and Criminal Behavior or any similar topic only for you Order Now When Socrates was convicted for heresy and the corruption of youth in the fifth century B. C. , a physiognomist charged that his face betrayed a brutal disposition. Greek culture embraced the notion that mind and body were interconnected; if a sound mind went together with a sound body, the implication was that a twisted mind resided in a deformed body. Aristotle confirmed this view in his Metaphysics when he reasoned that the essence of the body is contained in the soul. These opinions were ensconced into law in medieval Europe. Among those accused of demonic possession, ecclesiastical edicts interpreted large warts and moles on the skin as physical signs of the entry point of the devil into the soul (Einstadter and Henry 1995). Secular law directed jurists to convict the uglier of two people who were under equal suspicion for a crime (Wilson and Herrnstein 1985). In an echo of these sentiments some years later, Shakespeareââ¬â¢s Cassius, in Julius Caesar (Act I, Scene II), is judged a dangerous man by his ââ¬Å"lean and hungry look. â⬠The link between unattractiveness and criminal behavior remained alive and well in 20th-century American popular culture. In his famous comic strip and in the movies it inspired, cartoonist Chester Gould sharply contrasted the square-jawed, clean-cut good looks of detective Dick Tracy with cutthroat criminals like the flat-headed ââ¬Å"Flattop,â⬠the pointy-snouted ââ¬Å"Mole,â⬠the wrinkle-cheeked ââ¬Å"Pruneface,â⬠and the big-bottomed ââ¬Å"Pear Shape. â⬠Hollywood imitated science in Johnny Handsome (1989), a feature film about a robber with grotesque facial deformities who reforms after receiving extensive cosmetic surgery. Some of the earliest criminological researchers shared this thinking. Physiognomy persisted throughout the 18th century, most notably in the work of Swiss scholar Johan Casper Lavater, whose influential Physiognomical Fragments appeared in 1775. One hundred years later, Italian prison physician Cesare Lombroso published Criminal Man (1876), a famous study that attributed criminal behavior to what he termed ââ¬Å"atavism,â⬠an inherited condition that made offenders evolutionary throwbacks to more primitive humans. By conducting autopsies on 66 deceased criminals, and comparing 832 living prison inmates with 390 soldiers, Lombroso created a list of physical features that he believed were associated with criminal behavior. These ââ¬Å"stigmataâ⬠included sloping foreheads, asymmetrical faces, large jaws, receding chins, abundant wrinkles, extra fingers, toes, and nipples, long arms, short legs, and excessive body hair-hardly the image of handsome men. The notion that criminal behavior was related to physical anomalies was dealt a severe blow by the publication of Charles B. Goringââ¬â¢s The English Convict in 1913. This study subjected 37 of Lombrosoââ¬â¢s stigmata to empirical testing by comparing 2,348 London convicts to a control group that represented a cross section of young Englishmen. Goring found little support for Lombrosoââ¬â¢s arguments, concluding that criminal behavior is caused by inherited feeblemindedness, not physical appearance. Undaunted by these results, Harvard anthropologist Earnest A. Hooton conducted an ambitious 12-year study that compared 13,873 male prisoners in 10 states with a haphazard sample of 3,023 men drawn from the general population, searching once more for physical differences. Hooton published his findings in The American Criminal and Crime and the Man, both books appearing in 1939. The books attributed criminal behavior to biological inferiority and ââ¬Å"degeneration,â⬠ascribing a variety of unattractive physical characteristics to criminals (including sloping foreheads, compressed facial features, drooping eyelids, small, protruding ears, projecting cheekbones, narrow jaws, pointy chins, and rounded shoulders). By the 1930s, however, biological research was rapidly losing favor, as criminologists increasingly argued that social factors alone cause criminal behavior. Hootonââ¬â¢s research was ridiculed in particular, one sociologist dismissing his findings as comically inept in historic proportions (or ââ¬Å"the funniest academic performanceâ⬠¦ since the invention of movable typeâ⬠[Reuter 1939]). Hooton was condemned for his circular reasoning: offenders were assumed to be biologically inferior, so whatever features differentiated criminals from noncriminals were interpreted as indications of biological inferiority. Despite the skepticism of many sociologists regarding these attempts to link physical unattractiveness to criminal conduct, self-derogation and general strain theories can explain this relationship. Self-derogation theory asserts that youth who are ridiculed by peers lose self-esteem and the motivation to conform (Kaplan 1980). General strain theory claims that repeated ââ¬Å"noxious,â⬠unwanted interactions produce disappointment, depression, frustration, and anger (Agnew 1992). Both theories see delinquency and crime as means of retaliation that boosts oneââ¬â¢s self-worth or vents oneââ¬â¢s anger. Certainly, unattractive youths are prime candidates for noxious ridicule that results in low self-esteem and emotional strain. Only a handful of modern studies have tested the relationships among attractiveness, criminal behavior, and perceptions about crime. Saladin, Saper, and Breen (1988), for example, asked 28 students in one undergraduate psychology class to judge the physical attractiveness of a group of photographs of young men. Forty students in another psychology class were asked to examine the same photographs and then assess the probability that those pictured would commit either robbery or murder. The researchers found that men rated as less attractive also were perceived to be prone to commit future violent crimes, suggesting that unattractive people are more likely to be branded as criminals. Another study randomly scrambled 159 photographs of young men incarcerated in juvenile reformatories with 134 photographs of male high school seniors (Cavior and Howard 1973). College sophomores in psychology courses were asked to rate the facial attractiveness of these youth. Significantly more high school seniors were judged attractive than males from the reformatories. In the fascinating policy-oriented research that became the basis for the movie Johnny Handsome, surgeons performed plastic surgery to correct deformities and disfigurements (e. g. , protruding ears, broken noses, unsightly tattoos, and needle track marks from intravenous drug use) on the faces, hands, and arms of 100 physically unattractive men at the time of their release from Rikers Island jail in New York City (Kurtzberg et al. 1978). These ex-convicts were matched against a control group of equally unattractive inmates released from the jail who received no reconstructive surgery. When the researchers compared recidivism rates one-year later, those who received the surgery had significantly fewer rearrests. Apparently, improved appearance resulted in improved behavior. These research findings are preliminary and suggestive; more definitive studies using better measurements are needed. In particular, future research should relate ratings of physical attractiveness to the self-reported riminal behavior of persons taken from the general population. Such studies would rule out the possibility that unattractive offenders are more likely to appear in jails and reformatories simply due to the prejudices of the police and prosecutors. Nevertheless, existing research hints that the folk wisdom dating back to the ancient Greeks may have some basis in reality. Physical appearance is related to self-worth and behavior; as th e adage goes, ââ¬Å"pretty is as pretty does. â⬠When it comes to criminal behavior, the opposite may be true as well. Essay Mary Shelleys Frankenstein is written in several different narrative frames, the first being Captain Robert Waltons letters to his sister in England, whilst he is on a voyage of discovery to the North Pole. He relates the sightings of the creature and the discovery of Victor Frankenstein in his letters. At the end of the final letter, Walton introduces Victors tale, and we are then assured that the main narrator throughout the novel will be Walton, and that the tale of Victor (and later the tale of the creation) will be related through him. This theme of listening happens to be ongoing throughout the novel. Frankensteins creation tells him: Listen to my tale: when you have heard that, abandon or commiserate me, as you shall judge that I deserve. But hear me. The guilty are allowed, by human laws, bloody as they are, to speak in their own defence before they are condemned. Listening to stories is the essential ingredient to the future success of each of the characters in this novel. We can derive from his letters that Waltons values and morals arent ideal, but from listening to the story of Victor Frankenstein, we assume that Walton can reassess his life and change its course. The telling of stories allows another perspective to be taken into account. Later in the novel we find out that if Victor had heard the tale of his creation before he judged and rejected it, things would have been very different. If the moral in a story is accurately transferred, then the listeners then have the option of rectifying their mistakes and setting themselves back on track. What remains to be seen of course is if the characters identify this opportunity and make use of it. Mary Shelleys Frankenstein fits into the genre of Gothic Horror. In Waltons first letter, even his sister had anticipated his journey with evil forebodings. This is typically gothic; it is daunting and incites trepidation in the reader. We also find out Waltons aims and aspirations, and the plans for his voyage of discovery. Walton seems to be very self-satisfied with his plans, and we get the feeling of pride when he says: I shall satiate my ardent curiosity with the sight of a part of the world never before visited, and may tread a land never before imprinted by the foot of man. Of course this is the typical use of dramatic irony in the Victorian era when pride comes before a fall was a phrase commonly used. This stimulates a feeling of gothic foreboding in the reader, a kind of preparation for what is to come. There is much gothic typicality in the fourth letter, when at the beginning of his story Frankenstein proclaims: Prepare to hear of occurrences which are usually deemed marvellous. Waltons last comment in letter four is equally foreboding: Strange and harrowing must be his story, frightful the storm which embraced the gallant vessel on its course and wrecked it thus! I think these statements are small insights to the tale that is about to unfold they prepare us for the horror of Victors story. Jacobââ¬â¢s son hawked their young sibling, Joseph to dealers, who in turn hawked him as a slave in the Egyptian land. This was Godââ¬â¢s work and plan since there came a time where there was famine in the land of Canaan and all the family was forced to go to Egypt to buy food. Unfortunately, Joseph rescued his family by providing them with food. This was a pure indicator of Goodââ¬â¢s mercies to bless humanity. God promised Abraham that he will give him a son at his old age. The promises were finally fulfilled when he gave out his son at the old age. The son was Isaac and through his lineage, the world has turned to be a place of blessings. Through Abraham, God has made the world to turn to Him once more, despite the rejection and ignorance of mankind (Genesis 12:5-10). From the story of exodus, when God delivered his people from the land of suffering and misery to the Promised Land, it was an indicator that God was working to bless all humanity through the promises. This was also one of the promises that God gave to Abraham that He will give his people land to dwell in. this was a sign of blessings. The covenant also that God made to Moses, for example giving His people Ten Commandments to guide them through their life to avoid evils. The Fiscal Services Unit prepares operating and capital budget requests for the police department based on information provided by each unit or division's commanding officer. In accordance with the readings for this course, I would classify the budget system as an annual system (meaning that a budget is proposed for each year). For fiscal year 2007/2008, which began on July 1, 2007 and continues until June 30, 2008, the police department's operating budget is $69,106,663; personnel costs comprise 98% of the operating budget. After receiving the adopted budget from the city, the Fiscal Services Unit monitors expenditures to ensure that they are in compliance with the department's budget. The annual budget model is the best suited for the City of Yonkers as it allows the Fiscal Services Unit to maintain the pulse of the budget while planning ahead for the city's needs for the next year. Cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the body. Breast cancer is a form of cancer that originates in the tissues of the breast. Using the latest technology researchers have determined that there is a specific line of genes linked to breast cancer, breast cancer (BRCA) 1 and BRCA 2 genes. The ability to test a patient for these breast cancer genes will help lead to better diagnosis and treatment for those with the gene. Often breast cancer will start from a single abnormal cell that grows into a benign tumor (Mader123). The tumor originates in the milk duct, where an extra lining of cells is formed that fills the ducts, this is known as ductal carcinoma. Another form, lobular carcinoma is when the cancer begins in the lobules, which are the glands that make the milk. Breast cancer is most common in females; however, males can still have breast cancer. In women it is recommended to be screened for breast cancer via self examination or mammograms, depending on age. Women who are over the age of forty are recommended to have a mammogram done every one to two years. Age is another risk because as a person gets older their risk increases. Race and ethnicity is another risk factor; white women are more at risk for breast cancer than African American women. Only about 5% to 10% of breast cancer cases are thought to be hereditary, resulting directly from gene defects inherited from a parent (cancer.org). Breast cancer can be classified by either BRCA 1 or BRCA 2 gene, which defines the mutation of the breast cancer gene. This form of breast cancer is considered genetic, which is when one dominate gene is passed onto subsequent generations and can result in the BRCA 1 or BRCA 2 gene. There are genes that can help with DNA repair, but in this case it is not a damaged gene it is mutated and cannot be repaired. Females who are heterozygous for the BRCA 1 mutation have a higher risk of getting breast cancer. The gene loci for BRCA 1 gene can be found on the 27th chromosome, it is known as a tumor suppressor gene that provides the blueprint for protein that breaks cellular growth**. Families who have history of breast and ovarian cancer have a strong occurrence of the BRCA1 gene and as a result there is a high risk for breast and ovarian cancer. Individuals that do have a family history of breast and ovarian cancers tend to acquire these cancers at a young age or acquire the more aggressive forms. The gene loci for the BRCA 2 gene is found on the 13th chromosome; although breast cancer is rare in men, this gene tends to affect males at a higher rate. The gene for BRCA 2 is not expressed as often as BRCA 1, and families who carry this gene tend to be at a lower risk for developing cancer. Men who carry the BRCA 2 mutations are at a higher risk of developing breast cancer by age 70. Breast cancer is more commonly found in families with high male and female breast cancer occurrences. Breast cancer can also be related to ethnic background and specifically families who are of Jewish decent tend to be more likely to develop breast cancer due to a high mutation rate. Prevalence of BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations in different ethnic groups in theà U.S. BRCA1 Asian American 0.5% African American African American 1.3-1.4% Caucasian Caucasian (non-Ashkenazi Jewish) 2.2-2.9% Hispanic 3.5% Ashkenazi Jewish 8.3-10.2% Adapted from National Cancer Institute materialsà [5]. Figure : Prevalence of BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations in different ethnic groups in the U.S. (komen.org) This table shows the percentages of the different ethnic groups and their chance of developing the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene. Men or women who are considered to be at high risk for breast cancer have the option to be tested. A person is considered to be at high risk if there are two or more family members that have had breast or ovarian cancer. The test for the breast cancer gene is a blood test that checks the DNA to see if there is a mutation in the BRCA 1 or BRCA 2 gene. A positive result of this test means that the patient has inherited the mutated gene. It is not definitive that the patient will get breast cancer as it requires unidentified environmental factors in order for the cancer to develop. However, a positive result means that the patient can pass the mutated gene to their children. If a person receives a negative result of having the breast cancer gene, it does not necessarily mean that they are not at risk for breast cancer, it means that they do not have the gene. In fact, 90 to 95 percent of breast cancer is not a result of BRCA 1 or BRCA 2, and 5 to 10 percent of women have the heredity fa ctor of breast cancer (Schnipper221). Also, The child of a parent who has a positive gene has a 50 percent risk of inheriting the mutation (Schnipper223). Testing for a genetic inheritance of the gene can be very helpful for families to know if they are carrying the mutated gene, and it can also be upsetting to the families who are affected. If a test comes back positive for the gene it will put other members of the family at risk for carrying the gene. Breast cancer heredity is very rare and it does not occur in every family. Age and ethnic background play a huge role in determining if you have a higher risk of carrying the gene. If a Jewish woman younger than 40 has breast cancer, there is about a 33% chance that they will be a carrier of the gene. While those who are not Jewish and have breast cancer before 30 have a 12% chance of having a mutation (Love108). This illustrates that the genetic test is not a good determinant of risk for cancer. Positive results from the breast cancer test have a few options to lower their risk of getting breast cancer. Patients can choose to be monitored closer by their doctors for breast cancer signs by having frequent breast exams, mammograms, MRIs, ultrasounds, blood tests, and also by self examination. A more aggressive step could be having prophylactic surgery, such as a double mastectomy. The surgery is a quite radical surgery and is not a common choice. Research has indicated that those who carry either the BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation can lower their risk of getting the cancer by keeping up with a physical, healthy lifestyle and by breastfeeding. Although that may not work on everyone, it has shown to help with some patients who carry the mutation. There is not much that can be done to prevent the chances of getting breast cancer besides radical surgery. There are other factors such as carrying the mutated breast cancer gene that can elevate the risk of getting breast cancer, a second primary cancer, which is a second breast tumor that is not related to the first tumor, can also show an increased risk of occurring with patients who carry the mutation. For BRCA1/2 carriers, the chance of a contralateral breast cancer 10 years after diagnosis of the first cancer is about 18 to 30 percent compared to about 10 percent for breast cancer survivors without a BRCA1/2 mutation (komen.org). Surgery, radiation therapy, tamoxifen, and chemotherapy are the most commonly used treatments for breast cancer. The treatment that is used depends on the type and severity of the cancer. A patient will go over the options that work best for them with their doctor to help get the best treatment. Two other surgeries that are performed depending on the patients cancer are Lumpectomy, and Mastectomy. Lumpectomy is a surgery that removes only the cancerous lump from the breast. Mastectomy is removal of the entire breasts to remove the cancer and the tissue that surrounds it. Men and women who have breast cancer as a result of a genetic mutation will go through the same treatments. A patient who has a genetic mutation of breast cancer does not have their own treatment plan. Although they can take precautions to help prevent their chance of developing breast cancer, there is no different treatment if they do have breast cancer. Only five to ten percent of breast cancer patients in the United States are linked to a high risk genetic mutation (komen.org). Men and women who inherited the BRCA 1 or BRCA 2 gene, do not make up the population of those who suffer from breast cancer. Having a genetic mutation is not the only way for a patient to receive breast cancer, there are many other aspects. There are chances that getting breast cancer may be genetically linked, but there is still research being conducted to investigate the occurrence of breast cancer. One of the struggles was controlling the infection rate in thedepartment it is need to be minting and working to reduce the high rate so is not easy toachieve. For example, the report for one of the infraction control indicators showed that therate of central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) was high. Clinical governance plays an important role in improving healthcare systems by enhancing and maintaining the continuity of the healthcare provided, creating an evidence-based framework for managing the healthcare provider, refining professional performance by providing scientific resources, and minimising the risk to the patient. It is also important to guarantee patient satisfaction (Kapur, 2009).Working with the clinical governance department lead to the idea for reducing the high rate of CLABSI by using bundles to monitor staff members during insertion of the central line and to make sure that is the blood instruction with the clean producer. The care bundles are providing the evidence based interventions by collecting the interventions in one protocol, that will help to get an excellent outcome (Fulbrook & Mooney, 2003). The result of implementing bundles was excellent, and the rate of CLABSI went down by 50% in the first month, and within three months the rate had dropped by more than 80%. Staff role in ensuring quality and safety:the quality of the nurses' work and safety of patients is essential toproviding excellent care to patients. nurses are the major part of health care providers andit is essential that they take care of preventing medical errors and maintain patient safety. The clinical manager has the role to ensure that bundles were properly implemented and supervised by using one staff member in each shift to check the bundles to verify that all of the health care providers were committed to the bundles instructions. This helped to ensure consistency in the quality of care provided to the patients.(Barbara et al., 2014) Empowering consumers:empowering nurses to take a more active role in their healthcare experience canlead to providing better healthcare. I believe that requiring continuing education allows thenurses to improve their expertise. Furthermore, having nurses share their knowledge isimportant because it helps them to become role models. Nurses must belief in their value andmake sure they apply what they belief in realty to provide better care for patients. Also, creating a positive communication environment is crucial to improving the relationshipbetween patients and nurses, which is reflected in the healthcare outcome. Improving thepersonal ââ¬â central can have a significant impact on delivering excellent healthcare. The prerequisites for a professional nurse focus on the nurse's attributes and include beingprofessionally competent, having developed interpersonal skills, being committed to the job, being able to demonstrate clarity of beliefs and values, and knowing oneself (Tanya V.McCance, 2006). The empowerment is most successful when it is internal, ratherthan external. Therefore, nursing students must be taught how to empower themselves a supported. Empowering nurses can lead to promote health care and that will reflect in patient health. Written by Christine Hassler, a former Hollywood Agent, and the author of the book called Twenty-Something, Twenty-Everything. This article talks about social networks, their impact on both of our social and love life. It tries to convince us to try to experience all the benefits that online dating provides us. Technology has implemented itself in almost every aspect of our daily lives, and the new big thing we have currently is the rave of online dating. Computers are day in day out coming out with new dating websites, and people are buying into the whole idea of it being a last resort and only option left. Of course it is so much easier to sit on a computer and explain detailed information about yourself and come up with matches or results, but where was this decades ago when there was no such thing as the internet. Before computers this means that men and women actually had to go out in public and communicate back and forth to find their life partners. Nonetheless, I donââ¬â¢t consider the online dating strategy to be an effective or good idea in the first place because there are too many problems and negative effects that can come from it more so than positive ones. I think people should be very careful. Meeting strangers face to face in social situations is good so long as you size them up, look at their body language and how they interact with others. See their friends as this will tell you a lot about them. Before considering them a romantic possibility it is better to get to know them first as friends and find out what they are really like. At least nine to twelve players are gathered around 2 gaming arcade machines in front of me. The two main popular ones that are of interest would be the Street Fighter 3rd Strike and the Marvel vs Capcom 2 machines. The gamers are heavily immerse in watching the players and cheering them on. I am observing four players playing on two separate machines. The two players who are on MVC2 are wearing both hooded jackets and baggy jeans with tennis shoes. The players that have more spectators I observe a higher level of energy being presented and a potential hostility. The gamers who are playing on the 3rd strike machine were a lot more calm and benevolent. I will hear the players commend each other about how that was a great move and basically playing nice. Compared to the players on the MVC2 machine where the players would suggest that it was a lucky shot in a mean way. The players that are watching contribute to the heat by instigating and yelling out fighting words I can see that the players are irritated and playing much more aggressive, the tapping of the buttons and movements of the joystick is much more prevalent and erratic. The players on the 3rd strike machine even stopped a few times to watch the battle going on and two guys from the pool table nearby would occasionally look up to watch the commotion. After thirty minutes in, there had been three rotations of players on the MVC2 machine and I noted that one of the players had been winning against all his opponents. Get me ink and paper / And hire post-horses. I will hence tonightâ⬠(5.1.24-26). Although Romeo is a flawed character, Juliet loves him unconditionally and is exceptionally loyal to himââ¬â a trait that led to her demise. Heweaves a tale of suffering and how each character attempts to deliverthemselves from this misery. In the novel Crime and Punishment, hetells the story of Raskolnikov, a former student who murders an oldpawnbroker as an attempt to prove a theory. In Notes from theUnderground, we are given a chance to explore Dostoyevskys opinion ofhuman beings. Dostoyevskys characters are very similar, as is his stories. He putsa strong stress on the estrangement and isolation his characters feel. His characters are both brilliant and sick as mentioned in each novel, poisoned by their intelligence. In Notes from the Underground, thecharacter, who is never given a name, writes his journal from solitude. He is spoiled by his intelligence, giving him a fierce conceit withwhich he lashes out at the world and justifies the malicious things hedoes. At the same time, though, he speaks of the doubt he feels at thevalue of human thought and purpose and later, of human life. Hebelieves that intelligence, to be constantly questioning andfaithless(ly) drifting between ideas, is a curse. To be damned to seeeverything, clearly as a window (and that includes things that arentmeant to be seen, such as the corruption in the world) or constantlyseeking the meaning of things elusive. Dostoyevsky thought that humansare evil, destructive and irrational. In Crime and Punishment, we see Raskolnikov caught between reason andwill, the human needs for personal freedom and the need to submit toauthority. He spends most of the first two parts stuck between wantingto act and wanting to observe. After he acts and murders the oldwoman, he spends much time contemplating confession. Raskolnikov seemstrapped in his world although there is really nothing holding him back;he chooses not to flee and not to confess, but still acts as though hessuffocation (perhaps guilt?)In both novels defeat seems inevitable. Both characters believe that normal man is stupid, unsatisfied andconfused. Perhaps they are right, but both characters fail to see thepositive aspects of humans; the closest was the scene between thenarrator of Notes from the Underground and Liza. In this scene healmost lets the human side show, rather than the insecure, closed offperson he normally is. I assert that Dostoyevskys characters are (clinically) depressive ofsome sort. They complain of a detachment to life and alienation fromother people, just going through the motions. They are suffering, butare unwilling to give up and are also helpless in terms of feelingbetter. They are confused as to what to do in the future and see itonly as a bleak possibility, just more problems. And with the collapseof certainty, men and women will do crazy things. A trulydemocratic political system has certain characteristics which prove itslegitimacy with their existence. One essential characteristic of a legitimatedemocracy is that it allows people to freely make choices without governmentintervention. Another necessary characteristic which legitimates government isthat every vote must count equally: one vote for every person. For this equalityto occur, all people must be subject to the same laws, have equal civil rights, and be allowed to freely express their ideas. Minority rights are also crucialin a legitimate democracy. No matter how unpopular their views, all peopleshould enjoy the freedoms of speech, press and assembly. Public policy should bemade publicly, not secretly, and regularly scheduled elections should be held. We will write a custom essay on US Democracy specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Since legitimacy may be defined as the feeling or opinion thepeople have that government is based upon morally defensible principles and thatthey should therefore obey it, then there must necessarily be a connectionbetween what the people want and what the government is doing if legitimacy isto occur. The U.S. government may be considered legitimate in some aspects, andillegitimate in others. Because voting is class-biased, it may not be classifiedas a completely legitimate process. Although in theory the American system callsfor one vote per person, the low rate of turnout results in the upper and middleclasses ultimately choosing candidates for the entire nation. Class isdetermined by income and education, and differing levels of these two factorscan help explain why class bias occurs. For example, because educated peopletend to understand politics more, they are more likely to vote. People with highincome and education also have more resources, and poor people tend to have lowpoli tical efficacy (feelings of low self-worth). Turnout, therefore, is low and, since the early 1960s, has been declining overall. Thewinner-take-all system in elections may be criticized for beingundemocratic because the proportion of people agreeing with a particularcandidate on a certain issue may not be adequately represented under thissystem. For example, a candidate who gets 40 percent of the vote, as longas he gets more votes than any other candidate, can be elected?even thoughsixty percent of the voters voted against him(Lind, 314). Politicalparties in America are weak due to the anti-party, anti-organization, andanti-politics cultural prejudices of the Classical Liberals. Because in the U.S. there is no national discipline to force citizens into identifying with apolitical party, partisan identification tends to be an informal psychologicalcommitment to a party. This informality allows people to be apathetic if theywish, willingly giving up their input into the political process. Though thisapathy is the result of greater freedom in America than in other countries, itultimately decreases citizens incentive to express their opinions aboutissues, therefore making democracy less legitimate. Private interests distortpublic policy making because, when making decisions, politicians must takeaccount of campaign contributors. An interest may be defined asany involvement in anything that affects the economic, social, oremotional well-being of a person. When interests become organized intogroups, then politicians may become biased due to their influences. Special interests buy favors from congressmen and presidents throughpolitical action committees (PACs), devices by which groups like corporations, professional associations, trade unions, investment banking groups?can pooltheir money and give up to $10,000 per election to each House and Senatecandidate(Lind, 157). Consequently, those people who do not becomeorganized into interest groups are likely to be underrepresented financially. .u346011a60add8f891eee4660f2da19a1 , .u346011a60add8f891eee4660f2da19a1 .postImageUrl , .u346011a60add8f891eee4660f2da19a1 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u346011a60add8f891eee4660f2da19a1 , .u346011a60add8f891eee4660f2da19a1:hover , .u346011a60add8f891eee4660f2da19a1:visited , .u346011a60add8f891eee4660f2da19a1:active { border:0!important; } .u346011a60add8f891eee4660f2da19a1 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u346011a60add8f891eee4660f2da19a1 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u346011a60add8f891eee4660f2da19a1:active , .u346011a60add8f891eee4660f2da19a1:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u346011a60add8f891eee4660f2da19a1 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u346011a60add8f891eee4660f2da19a1 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u346011a60add8f891eee4660f2da19a1 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u346011a60add8f891eee4660f2da19a1 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u346011a60add8f891eee4660f2da19a1:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u346011a60add8f891eee4660f2da19a1 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u346011a60add8f891eee4660f2da19a1 .u346011a60add8f891eee4660f2da19a1-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u346011a60add8f891eee4660f2da19a1:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Juvenile Delinquents Argumentative EssayThis leads to further inequality and, therefore, greater illegitimacy in thedemocratic system. The method in which we elect the President is fairlylegitimate. The electoral college consists of representatives who we elect, whothen elect the President. Because this fills the requirement of regularlyscheduled elections, it is a legitimate process. The President is extremelypowerful in foreign policy making; so powerful that scholars now speak of theImperial Presidency, implying that the President runs foreign policyas an emperor. The President is the chief diplomat, negotiator of treaties, andcommander-in-chief of the armed forces. The re has been a steady growth of thePresidents power since World War II. This abundance of foreign Presidentialpower may cause one to believe that our democratic system is not legitimate. However, Presidential power in domestic affairs is limited. Therefore, thoughthe President is very powerful in certain areas, the term ImperialPresidency is not applicable in all areas. The election process ofCongress is legitimate because Senators and Representatives are elected directlyby the people. Power in Congress is usually determined by the seniority system. In the majority party (the party which controls Congress), the person who hasserved the longest has the most power. The problem with the seniority system isthat power is not based on elections or on who is most qualified to be in aposition of authority. Congress is also paradoxical because, while it is good atserving particular individual interests, it is bad at serving the generalinterest (due to its fragmented structure of committees and sub-committees). Themanner in which Supreme Court Justices are elected is not democratic becausethey are appointed by the President for lifelong terms, rather than in regularlyscheduled elections. There is a non-political myth that the onlything that Judges do is apply rules neutrally. In actuality, they interpret lawsand the Constitution using their power of judicial review, the power explicitlygiven to them in Marbury v. Madison. Though it has been termed theimperial judiciary by some, the courts are the weakest branch ofgovernment because they d epend upon the compliance of the other branches forenforcement of the laws. The bureaucracy is not democratic for many reasons. Thekey features of a bureaucracy are that they are large, specialized, run byofficial and fixed rules, relatively free from outside control, run on ahierarchy, and they must keep written records of everything they do. Bureaucracies focus on rules, but their members are unhappy when the rules areexposed to the public. Bureaucracies violate the requirement of a legitimatedemocracy that public policy must be made publicly, not secretly. To be hired ina bureaucracy, a person must take a civil service exam. People working inbureaucracies may also only be fired under extreme circumstances. This usuallyleads to the Peter Principle; that people who are competent at theirjobs are promoted until they are in jobs in which they are no longer competent. Policy making may be considered democratic to an extent. The public tends to getits way about 60% of the time. Because one of the key legitimating factors ofgovernment is a connection between what it does and what the public wants, policy making can be considered 60% legitimate. Furthermore, most of what thefederal government does never reaches the public. Public opinion polls representthe small percentage of issues that people have heard about. Though theindividual workings of the American government may not be particularlydemocratic, it must be somewhat legitimate overall because without legitimacy, government fails. However, the people who run for and win public officeare not necessarily the most intelligent, best informed, wealthiest, or mostsuccessful business or professional people. At all levels of the politicalsystem,it is the most politically ambitious people who are willing tosacrifice time, family and private life, and energy and effort for the power andcelebrity that comes with public office(Dye, 58-59). The legitimacy of theUnited States government is limited, but in a system of government which wasdesigned not to work, complete democracy is most likely impossible. .ubf9e4f6f1be027f93ccdf326b107bf3f , .ubf9e4f6f1be027f93ccdf326b107bf3f .postImageUrl , .ubf9e4f6f1be027f93ccdf326b107bf3f .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ubf9e4f6f1be027f93ccdf326b107bf3f , .ubf9e4f6f1be027f93ccdf326b107bf3f:hover , .ubf9e4f6f1be027f93ccdf326b107bf3f:visited , .ubf9e4f6f1be027f93ccdf326b107bf3f:active { border:0!important; } .ubf9e4f6f1be027f93ccdf326b107bf3f .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ubf9e4f6f1be027f93ccdf326b107bf3f { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ubf9e4f6f1be027f93ccdf326b107bf3f:active , .ubf9e4f6f1be027f93ccdf326b107bf3f:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ubf9e4f6f1be027f93ccdf326b107bf3f .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ubf9e4f6f1be027f93ccdf326b107bf3f .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ubf9e4f6f1be027f93ccdf326b107bf3f .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ubf9e4f6f1be027f93ccdf326b107bf3f .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ubf9e4f6f1be027f93ccdf326b107bf3f:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ubf9e4f6f1be027f93ccdf326b107bf3f .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ubf9e4f6f1be027f93ccdf326b107bf3f .ubf9e4f6f1be027f93ccdf326b107bf3f-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ubf9e4f6f1be027f93ccdf326b107bf3f:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: alcohol and nutrition EssayBibliographyDye, Thomas R. They are of Mexican descent and most of them trace their origin to the ancient colonial settlers. The Mexican Americans are descendants of Mexicans and Spaniards. The group is multiracial. The Mexican Americans are mostly concentrated in Southwest of the United States. Today many Mexican Americans are illegal immigrants as they come to look for employment.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Mexican American/Chicano/Latino/Hispanic Cultural Variations in Childrearing specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Mexican Americans migrated to the United States during the early colonial days. Most of the Mexican Americans lived in areas in the USA that once belonged to Mexico that is areas such as California, Texas, Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and others and in the regions that they got employment as well as in steel producing areas in the United States. The i dentity of this group has changed rapidly throughout history as it fought for equal treatment in the USA. Today the group struggles to the definition and maintenance of their identity. The Mexican Americans form the largest part of employees in labor market. The rising numbers of illegal immigrants provide cheap labor to their white employers and most work as janitors, gardeners and other blue-collar jobs. In matters of education, due to their immigrant status most families had to choose between sending their children to or save the meager income for other needs (Englekirk and Marin 1). The Mexican Americans have strong family values and have strong family relationships. The bond goes beyond the nuclear family due to familism-family obligation and care. Mexican Americans has strong cultural practices that are passed on to children and this responsibility is mainly left to the women. Through socialization, the children are able to grow up and become integral members of the family. Th e parents often demand that the children comply with authority and those who fail are often punished physically. Through strict parenting, the children are given verbal commands and often-harsh threats when it comes to discipline. Through this strategy, parents want to teach their children the value of family or familismo and respect especially for the adults-respecto. This involves parental behavior that the children are supposed to copy to learn how to behave in the family or with the family norms. Next, let us focus on gender socialization among the Mexican Americans (Livas-Dlott, Alejandra et al 567-9). Gender socialization among the Mexican Americans is tailored along traditional roles. Just like in most societies in the world in which gender roles are determined by oneââ¬â¢s sex so is the Mexican American gender socialization. It is also interesting to note that in spite of changes about gender roles in the country most Mexican Americans retain their traditional view about gender expectations (Raffaelli and Ontai 288).Advertising Looking for essay on cultural studies? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Traditionally the female gender roles are being submissive, dependent and chaste. On the other hand, male gender roles are independent, virile and dominant. The different ideals of gender roles thus have an impact on how boys and girls are socialized to fit in their expected gender roles. For example, the girls were expected to maintain their virginity and thus had to be careful during dating while the boys did not have to observe any rules during dating. This means that girls are restricted from interacting with romantic partners in case they lose their virginity. Girls are also restricted in their movements and cannot go wherever they wish as their brothers can as their parents tend to be very protective with them (Raffaelli and Ontai 287-288; Englekirk and Marin 1). The Mexican Americans parents have different child rearing habits from their African Americans and Anglo Americans. ââ¬Å"The Mexican Americans place greater emphasis on the development of proper demeanor and a sense of dignity than on early achievement or attainment of developmental milestonesâ⬠(Kolobe 440). The Mexican American families are nurturing, indulgent and egalitarian. This leads to different outcomes of their childrenââ¬â¢s behavior and that of children from other cultural backgrounds in the United States. It is also important to note that the among the Mexican Americans there are different child rearing practices depending on the origin of parents for example parents who are USA born and speak English tend to allow their daughters to play like boys and are less protective. On the contrary, parents who emphasized on traditional femininity roles have lower levels of education. In addition, fathers who encourage their sons to get involved with roles traditionally set out for girls an d restrict their sons movement have higher education levels(Raffaelli and Ontai 294-295). Mexican Americans even in the 21st century are still considered as foreigners by the other members of the society (Englekirk and Marin 1). Many of them have complained about discrimination and especially about police profiling. The Mexican American youths face problems concerning identity as they try to maintain their cultural identity as socialized and being acculturated into the Anglo American culture fully due to the benefits that come with it such as speaking English. The youths also face the challenge of a segregated educational, system and the schools they attend lack all the necessary facilities and many students drop up thus reducing their employability (Chavkin195). It is important for the problems that Mexican Americans face to be addressed well to reduce the feelings of anti-Americanism by the Mexican Americans, as America is their country too.Advertising We will write a cust om essay sample on Mexican American/Chicano/Latino/Hispanic Cultural Variations in Childrearing specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Chavkin, Nancy Feyl. The model below clearly depicts the flow of information from operational systems to end users: From the conceptual framework, it could be deduced that the operational systems undergo a series of processes on the information or data upon solicitation: extraction, integration, cleansing, and transformation. This information is then stored in the organizationââ¬â¢s data warehouse to serve varied needs and demands of the users. The cause of delays in soliciting data from the external environment could be diverse: from frequent changes in factors affecting the external environment to the need to update currently available information. As emphasized, ââ¬Å"reports generated in high data volume environments normally take a long time to run. To speed up report generation, many systems use tools that employ a summarization technique to reduce the amount of records by aggregating records together with common characteristics. Problem with this technique includes inherent inflexibility and inability to cope with the constantly changing information needs of manufacturingâ⬠(MAIA Intelligence, 2009, p. 4). Overall, the information gathered by the IT department needs to be processed and transformed in the most accurate manner before being transformed and stored to the organizationââ¬â¢s data warehouse. As such, the delay should be understandable given the volume of information from the external environment that needs to be summarized and integrated according to the usersââ¬â¢ needs. Concurrently, experts in BI has asserted that ââ¬Å"business leaders want to obtain real metrics and near-real-time, linked directly to the business processes, system data and insights Janehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12453576189513542966noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6373153838470068532.post-17427295361463862532019-11-19T10:40:00.001-08:002019-11-19T10:40:03.350-08:00Employment-At-Will Doctrine Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words - 1Employment-At-Will Doctrine - Essay Example Similarly, the Employment-At-Will Doctrine provides that an employee can leave his/her job without any reason, cause or warning (Stone, 2007). Thus, when employees feel that they do not wish to continue working for the current employer, they can just leave their work station without any explanation whatsoever. This doctrine has emerged as controversial, considering that the proponents of the doctrine observes that it is a balanced contractual policy, where both the employer and the employee are given absolute freedom to determine whether they should continue with an employment contract or not. However, those opposing this doctrine observe that it serves to create more injustice, considering that the bargaining powers between the employer and the employee are not equal (Stone, 2007). The employer always have an upper hand, and thus those opposed to the doctrine finds it inappropriate, since it allows the employer to dismiss employees anyhow, while the employees are left without any re medy or cause of action, when such an action is taken. Therefore, the bottom-line of the Employment-At-Will Doctrine is that there exists no law that protects the employee or the employer against any action that any of the party to the employment contract may take, whether on the basis of good reason, bad one or no reasons at all (Stone, 2007). Evaluating each of the eight (8) scenarios and assessing whether one can legally fire the employee The action taken by John is not within his rights under the employment-at-will doctrine, which grants an employee the right to strike, quit freely or cease to work (Stone, 2007). The doctrine does not provide the freedom for an employee to take any action that can harm the employer, other than quitting at will or striking for any reason. Therefore, the action taken by John warrants his sacking, since he is destroying the relationship between the employer and its clientele. The action taken by Jim to send an email to the rest of the employees, pr otesting a change in commission schedules and bonuses is within his rights under the employment-at-will doctrine, since it entails protesting against wrongful discrimination, which is an exception under employment-at-will doctrine, within the protected actions (Stone, 2007). Therefore, it will not be right to fire him, since he is protesting against discriminatory change in commission schedules and bonuses. Similarly, Ellen has taken an action that is within her rights under the employment-at-will doctrine, through criticizing the employer on the blog, on the basis of what she believes to be wrongful discrimination in CEOââ¬â¢s bonus, which only favors director, leaving out the rest of the employees. This action is provided for under the exceptions to employment-at-will doctrine, where the employee should not be fired for protesting against protected actions, such as wrongful discrimination (Stone, 2007). Bill, on the other hand has taken an action that is against his rights, thr ough using the companyââ¬â¢s assets to run his side venture. This is not a right guaranteed to him by the employment-at-will doctrine, and thus warrants the employer to fire him. Joe is another employee that lacks any legal basis for suing the employer under the employment-at-will doctrine. Joe threatens to sue the company for invasion of privacy after being disciplined for Janehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12453576189513542966noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6373153838470068532.post-65315548858965414442019-11-16T23:11:00.001-08:002019-11-16T23:11:02.902-08:00Danshui Plant No.2 Essay Example for Free Danshui Plant No.2 Essay Danshui assembling computer hard drives on a contract that was fulfilled at the end of May 2010, although the assembly hard drives was different with assembly of Iphone, Danshui was confident that its workers would adapt to the new assembly tasks and that it could hire and train the additional workers as needed. But in fact, Danshui didnââ¬â¢t manage employee property. The workers showed low efficiency in assembly Iphone with produced lower quantity than budgeted which is 180,000 units instead of 200,000 units. Other than that, Danshui couldnââ¬â¢t hire enough qualified labor to get production up to 200,000 units even though they raised wages by 30% because of Foxconn starting pay by 35% to the labors. In addition, Danshui operation department keep having flash memories damage problem, there were around 1,000 flash memories damage in August. Itââ¬â¢s shown that Danshuiââ¬â¢s labors are not enough skill to assembly Iphone. We suggest that Wentao Chen could organize more training program for labors to solve the problem of damage of flash memories because of labors might lack of skill in assembly Iphone since they are more familiar in assembly computer hard drive before on contract with Apple. In order to improve the skill of labor in assembly Iphone so that will be decrease the number of damage of flash memories, and the decreasing of number of damage will be decrease the cost of assembly and increase the revenue. In addition, for the problem of couldnââ¬â¢t hire enough qualified labors to get the production of 200,000 units per month even though Danshui had raised the wages up to 30%. In order to solve this problem, we would like to suggest Wentao Chen to apply the intrinsic need of labor. For example, Danshui can set up a Childcare centre for take care the children of labors or provide free meal for those having over time workers and their children who in Childcare Centre. For example, Maybank has undergone various business transformations in the last four years to enhance their service offerings to their customers, improve operational efficiency and to focus efforts on their most valuable asset ââ¬â their people. Currently, Maybank has put in place a plan to build a childcare centre to be used by employees during emergency situations. Parents who are faced with challenges in securing childcare services are able to utilize the centre for a temporary period of time whilst they source for alternative childcare services and facilities. The centre will provide parents with a safe environment, high-quality care as well as provide fun activities for their children when their regular care provider is unavailable or during emergency situations. The childcare centre is cur rently under construction and targets to open its doors to employees by the last quarter of 2013. We believe itââ¬â¢s can fulfill the satisfaction of employees and increase the retention of employees, in the other hand Danshui also can attract labor to work in Danshui without raising wages. Other than that, Danshui can improve the productivity of labors to get the production of 200,000 units with their high satisfaction to Danshui. Wentao Chen could help Danshui to get the production of 200,000 units without improve skill of labor or improve the productivity by satisfied the labors, he could using ââ¬Å"outsourcingâ⬠to get 200,000 units production to reach the deal with Apple. Danshui can outsource to other similar assembly manufacturer for 20,000 units to fulfill the Apple contract. Many residents often do not realize the significance of this great city. Most individuals familiar with Worcester have heard about the smiley face, the first valentines, and the birth control pill all coming from Worcester, but these items tend to go to the back of oneââ¬â¢s mind after time. What many do not realize is that the First Womanââ¬â¢s National Rights Convention was held right here in Worcester as well. à à à à à This historical event took place at Brinley Hall on Main Street, In Worcester, Massachusetts, in October 1850, after being arranged by such prominent anti-slavery activists as Abby Kelley Foster and Lucy Stone. The convention drew a crowd of one thousand people, consisting of both whites and blacks, and most surprisingly to many, both men and women. à à à à à Speakers such as, Abby Price, Paulina Wright Davis, and Lucretia Mott spoke out at this event with extreme effectiveness towards advancements for the womanââ¬â¢s rights movements. ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ no one could listen to them without respect for the talent of the speakers, whatever they might think of the merits of the cause,â⬠reported the Massachusetts Spy newspaper. Although there was a similar convention held two years earlier in Seneca Falls, New York, it had attracted little attention. It was not until the First National Womanââ¬â¢s Rights Convention was held in Worcester that advancements to proposed resolutions were starting to spring about, due to its national recognition. à à à à à In my opinion, one of the most relevant resolutions brought up during this convention was that of women suffrage. Not only were speakers calling for women suffrage, but also for the suffrage and rights for African Americans as well. You can see this hope for the future from the quote of one of the resolves stating, ââ¬Å"Equality before the law, without distinction of sex or color.â⬠While many people might not have agreed with that statement back during this time, this convention proved of the intelligence and the universal respect for everyone that a lot of people exhibited at Brinley Hall. It went to show that not everyone was racially prejudice. Because there were men there also supporting the memorable event, it also showed that they knew in their wisdom that women were equal with men and were plenty capable to make decisions for the United States, by voting in the wonderful system of democracy. These men were strong and courageous for supporting such a radical idea, at that time, as the equality of sexes. Janehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12453576189513542966noreply@blogger.com0
